Best of '08 - SME Corporate Headquarters
The new SME Corporate Headquarters in West Jordan, Utah was named "Best Private Building under $5M" in Intermountain Contractor magazine's annual 'Best of Awards '08.'
Winning projects were selected based on design quality and innovation, craftsmanship, the project's contribution to the community and the industry, solution of unique design and construction challenges and overall excellence.
ONYX Construction was the General Contractor for the new 45,000-sq-ft corporate headquarters for SME Steel, which was designed to express the intricate steel structure of the facility, given SME’s status as one of the largest steel fabrication and erection firms in the western U.S. Steel columns are expressed on the outside with an 18-in shaft of glass that exposes them. On the interior, much attention was given to the column-to-beam connections and the finish of the exposed steel. Un-bonded braced seismic frames were exposed to showcase one of five patents that SME holds on its CoreBrace product – a BRBF system. The building is organized around a 20-ft by 50-ft glass atrium which brings copious amounts of daylight into the core. Offices are arranged around the perimeter with glass walls separating them from the atrium. Second floor balconies allow employees to enjoy fresh air and majestic mountain views. All floors are finished with stained concrete, echoing the industrial nature of the project.
Patriot Award
ONYX Construction was responsible for the newly restored Salt Lake City Cemetery Veterans section. This part of the cemetery had fallen victim to time and poor upkeep, as a result most of the grave markers were either broken, missing, sunken or faded and unreadable. Thanks to the generous donation by ONYX Construction and their partners, who donated more than $200,000.00 of their time, labor and materials to restore the cemetery headstones, all of the graves are now properly marked and aligned. This past May, on the traditional Memorial Day, a rededication ceremony was held to properly recognize the efforts of those who worked restore the cemetery as well as to recognize those who are laid to rest.
